Art in Occupational Therapy

This week the students picked up their mosaic pieces from My Clayground! They had fun creating unique pieces while they also benefitted from the therapeutic side of mosaic art. During the design phase, spatial planning, patterns and shapes are taken into consideration, challenging the student to see the bigger picture. Mosaic work requires fine motor precision, patience and visual motor integration as each piece is laid in its location. On the social integration and problem solving side, the students had to figure out what questions to ask when arriving (they already knew they were going to work on mosaics but needed to inform the employee) and formulate questions if they didn’t understand the instructions or needed help with their project. They also had to pay for their pieces, giving them the opportunity to use their functional math skills in a real world setting.
