We are in the holiday spirit at CPS! This week in OT we completed holiday activities that addressed many skills while engaging in festive tasks.
W completed a holiday map activity to target following directions, spatial concepts, and directionality. He had to read clues to answer questions about the map. He also used his best handwriting to complete the worksheet.
AC engaged in a holiday sequencing worksheet. We are working on concepts such as first, next, and last. These skills overlaps with not only academic skills but also daily routines and daily living skills.
The students helped decorate the Christmas tree this week! A dynamic surface was utilized to make the task slightly more challenging, working on balance and core stability. A pincer grasp was used to pick up the small hook to hang the ornament on the tree. The Christmas tree looks beautiful in our classroom!
We used a pipe cleaner and small beads to create an ABAB pattern to make a candy cane. The focus of this task included sequencing and fine motor development, as well as hand eye coordination. Cullen, the classroom therapy dog in training, is pictured. He is beneficial during learning times to aid in regulation, such as grading movements/pressure, voice volume, and self-control. He’s a great addition to the classroom!
AC is learning how to identify the first word, last word and punctuation of a sentence. In this activity her job was to put the unscrambled words in order to make a complete sentence. The first word always begins with a capital letter and the last word always has a punctuation mark.
W worked on reading a passage about ‘Surfing Santa’. He used his reading tool to help him track each word. When he finished reading the passage, W answered comprehension questions. W thought it was so funny that Santa goes surfing at the beach!
We had snow much fun in math this week learning how to count base ten blocks to find the correct number. We focused on numbers 1-20. On our ‘snow much fun’ worksheet, W and AC had to cut out the numbers on the bottom – these were the answers to the questions. Next they counted the tens and unit blocks and totaled up the number. They found the number and glued it in the correct box.
We are feeling the Christmas spirit this week! For a spelling activity, I had W and AC write their spelling words on different colored ornaments. They worked so hard to spell the words using their very best handwriting! After the activity, W had a great idea! He remembered the Christmas tree (made out of construction paper) that he made during OT and he suggested they put the ornaments on the tree. We have some creative and great thinkers at Cornerstone!
