Week of Jan 8th – Jan 12th

We love Wednesday’s with Coach Dave! Gymnastics naturally incorporates many goals and skills I target in treatment with W and AC. This week they played crab soccer, by assuming and maintain crab pose and then kicking the ball to each other. This is a GREAT strengthening, motor planning, and timing activity (all skills we have been addressing in OT).

We have been focusing on parts of a sentence including beginning words, ending word, spaces in between words, and punctuation. Here W is identifying the spaces in between each word.

This week we introduced the -ab word family to AC and W. During this activity, AC and W were given a card with an -ab word on it. We used various methods to reinforce sounding out and spelling these words. In the pictures below, students are using visuals of a sandwich to build the spelling words. Organizing vestibular/proprioceptive input was provided by bouncing on the therapy ball prior to spelling the words with Ms. Shelby. This type of input aids in attention and regulation for improved success in academic tasks during the school day

We are excited for the new year, and looking forward to all the things to come! W and AC used various materials to decorate each number in the year 2018. These materials promote a pincer grasp and smaller, isolated movements needed for daily life skills. Later on in the day we discussed resolutions for the new year. W said he wanted to “cook more with Mom” and AC wants to “play more” with her siblings.

So many skills are addressed through meal prep and cooking activities. On Friday we sequenced the steps to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, focusing on following directions and utensil use to spread the peanut butter and jelly on to the bread. Bon appetit!
