Week of Mar 26th – Mar 30th

Students participated in a movement-based handwriting activity. The tunnel was used to promote crawling which is important for prone extension (a movement pattern for sensory integration) shoulder stability and overall self-regulation for the handwriting task. Words associated with Easter were retrieved and then copied from the model (working on components of visual-motor and visual-perceptual skills such as eye-hand coordination and figure ground).

Easter is right around the corner! CPS participated in many activities to learn and celebrate Easter this week. In OT we used plastic Easter eggs to encourage fine motor skills, grading of movements/motor planning and bilateral coordination. Objects used during therapeutic tasks were hidden inside the eggs and then used to complete the tasks. For example, rubber bands were placed inside the eggs to complete the Geoboards.

Q-tip painting is a fun way to utilize a proper grasp pattern and work on motor control/accuracy. We painted an Easter egg template focusing on painting within the desired targets.

Students worked on Easter activities during academics this week. They used water colors to read the hidden sight words on the paper Easter eggs. This activity was a fun way to read their sight words and come up with a sentence for each word.

During math we used the Easter eggs and basket throughout the week. In this activity, a coin was inside each egg – the students had to open the egg, look at the coin and practice writing down the value of each coin on paper. After they identified the value of the coin, they sorted the eggs into correct cups depending on the coin inside the egg.

We completed a science experiment using eggs and vinegar to make “bouncy ball eggs.” We made predictions to about what will happen to the eggs while they are in the vinegar. Some students and teachers did not enjoy the smell of the vinegar! We concluded that the eggs were “bigger” and “smooth.” Some eggs bounced and some did not!

Scottsdale Farms is a local outdoor garden center that hosted an Easter egg hunt this week. The goal was to find five eggs and turn them in for a prize. We made it a tad bit more difficult by having AC find five pink eggs and W find five blue eggs. While at the farm we also fed chickens and enjoyed the farm animals.

Crafts promote many skills, such as creativity, fine motor development and following directions. W and AC both enjoy art activities! This week for Easter we made wreaths using glue and felt pieces. This was such a fun activity and the wreaths turned out so cute!
